Restorative Regenerative Medicine
The use of regenerative medicine is becoming increasingly popular in orthopedics and sports medicine as an effective non-surgical means of treating a number of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions including:
- Ligament and tendon injuries
- Chronic tendonitis
- Plantar fasciitis
Procedures such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and stem cell therapy can help stimulate a healing process in the body and decrease pain.
Your body’s blood cells are filled with platelets. When you experience an injury, platelets travel to the affected site and activate the repair process. They also release proteins that attract stem cells to the injured area. It turns off the inflammatory process without the side effects of medicines or steroids.
However, bones, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage often do not receive enough blood to help them heal adequately. When a sample of your blood is spun in a centrifuge at high speeds, platelets become concentrated within the plasma, which is the liquid portion of your blood.
Dr. Harrall will inject this solution of platelet-rich plasma directly into the site of your pain or injury to kickstart the healing process. Some people may feel relief after only one injection, although it usually takes time to feel the full effect, as platelets will continue to repair the damaged or diseased tissues over the course of weeks or months. You can safely receive up to three PRP injections in a 6-month period.
Stem Cell Therapy
Adult stem cells are found throughout your body inside different types of tissue. In orthopaedics and sports medicine, stem cells are more effective than PRP therapy in treating more severe soft tissue problems, such as advanced osteoarthritis as well as muscle, tendon, and ligament tears.
Stem cells may be taken from either bone marrow or fat within your own body. Dr. Harrall will advise which technique will be best for you. After the stem cells are processed and prepared, Dr. Harrall will inject the solution directly into the injured or diseased area. The concentrated stem cells will stimulate healing and speed repair through the regeneration of normal tissue. Most patients require up to three treatments administered approximately every 8 weeks.
PRP and stem cell therapy injections are performed by Dr. Harrall in the comfort of our own office. The whole process typically takes 1 to 2 hours. There is no sedation and most patients generally experience little discomfort.
